A 130-Year Heritage

The Evangelical movement in Ethiopia traces its roots back over 130 years to the late 19th century. From the pioneering work of reformers and the first arrival of missions in the 1880s, the movement has grown through local initiatives, surviving challenging eras to become a foundational pillar of Ethiopian spiritual and social life.

Who We Are

The Umbrella Organization for Evangelicals in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian Council of Gospel Believers’ Churches (ECGBC) is a legally established institution formed by Proclamation No. 1208/2012 of the House of Peoples’ Representatives of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE). The Council represents Ethiopians and people of Ethiopian origin living both within Ethiopia and across the globe.

Globally, ECGBC coordinates a Gospel-believing community of more than 35 million people. Nationally, it brings together churches with a history of over 130 years of service and witness.

Beyond its spiritual mandate, ECGBC works closely with its member churches to provide holistic services to society. Its engagements include peacebuilding and the promotion of peace values, rehabilitation and reconstruction, clean water supply, health services, and education.

In carrying out its mission, the Council collaborates with long-established national and international institutions that share similar goals and values, working together to serve communities both in Ethiopia and around the world.
